Louis Armstrong Park and Congo Square
Armstrong Park was created to honor New Orleans' favorite son, the great Louis Armstrong, and to preserve the site of Congo Square. This historical area was once the Sunday gathering place of African Slaves, Red Indians and Creoles. The Slave dances and musical celebrations held there reflect the deepest roots of African culture expressed in the New World. Eventually Marie Laveau would transform these gatherings into her unique form of Voodoo.
